Well the 64M SODIMM for the new notebook arrived yesterday. Popped it in, it worked perfectly.

Today, I went to do some writing. Well, the 380XD is different enough from the 380Z that MS Office balked about wanting to be recertified, or whatever the hell that intrusive crap is. It wanted my XP Disk. Well, I reached for a set of Linux disks I had handy, and installed Linux. MS just pisses me off with that shit - I wasn't willing to cross my living room for the sake of using Word. I like KOffice better anyway.

So now the 380XD is just about right. I need to copy some config files off the staging server to drop on here because I don't feel like hacking Samba again. But once that's done, I should be a happy kitty.

MS Word is really overrated anyway. I find I get a lot done with just WordPad.

Save MS Word's spell checker is the best there is. The freebie spell checkers I've used all sucked, which is bad because I really Really need a good spell checker =:-D

Overrated, overblown, and regrettably necessary when accepting files from outside sources. Since I don't edit a newsletter any more, that last bit is now less of a consideration than it was.

Linux runs better on older, small memory systems anyways, a wise choice assuming all the hardware devices are working ok.

Linux was on the machines that were stolen. So this just about brings me back around to where I was before that happened. It feels good having a notebook again.

Now I just need to figure out how to set my staging server up as a BDC for my Windows NT Domain, then I can kiss one more M$ box goodbye. I'd like to eradicate it completely, but there are one or two apps (Paint Shop Pro, CuBasis) that I haven't found equivalents for that I like.

Lotus Word Pro is pretty good, with the same main formatting functions and all. There's a free, open-source office suite, OpenOffice (http://www.openoffice.org/), which might be worth a look - I haven't tried it, but I think I've read about government organisations using it.

OpenOffice has either not run for me, or run so slowly as to be useless. It's written in Java and just has too much overhead.

I enjoyed WordPro when I used it, but I'm partial to WordPerfect myself, but Corel seems to have stopped producing the Linux port of it. So I use KWord in KOffice.
