Brief review:
Sweet, funny and visually delicious. Go see.

Slightly longer review:
If you are a fan of the book and are expecting to see that experience transferred to film, adjust your expectations. The film works really well as a film on its own merits, and since film is a visual medium, sight gags do, from time to time, replace Adams' verbal wit. Judge it on its own merit, without reference to the book and you will find that it is satisfying on its own terms.

Highlights:

1. "So Long and Thanks For All The Fish." with Dolphins dancing in the Busbey Berkley style.
2. "Resistance is useless" was penned by Adams before any Borg ever commented on the futility of resistance on a screen of any size. Adams, who was working on the film until he died, gives the Star Trek franchise a wink and a nod in the form of Vogon ships resembling Borg Cubes.
3. The Star Wars franchise receives a similar nod in some of the details of the capture of Trillian
4. Marvin the Paranoid Android is given the coup de grace, and it is deliciously ironic.

Other points:
It was two months ago that I first laid eyes on Marvin. I did not like what I saw, because I had always visualized him as sort of a male counterpart to "Rosie" from the Jetsons. However, seeing him in action, although a bit jarring at first, was ultimately satisfying. The large head and ponderous movements on a creature that is 3/4 human size convey the feeling of depression quite well. The extremely spare face conveys a feeling of ennui with a curve and two triangles. As a cartoonist, I bow in awe.

There are artifacts in the film that are not in the book, and their presence in the location they are found is inexplicable. However, the artifact in question is good for a few good gags, and the plot ultimately hinges on it, so deal.

The Hitch Hiker Guide animations are incredibly witty and can stand as animated shorts on there own. It's kind of like if Terry Gilliam had worked in Flash.

It ends hinting at, but not obligating itself to a sequel. There is one loose end left untied, but the tools are in the hands of the characters to tie up that loose end at their convenince, so I don't find it a bother.

One question: Is Marvin really paranoid, or was Adams just being cute with the nickname? I didn't read the whole series, but all I saw of him was depression, not a feeling that anyone was out to get him.
