Hardly any denouement. Does Harry ever graduate? Does he have to sit for his NEWTs or are they waived for the trio upon completion of their, um, senior project? Do Luna and Neville end up together? Who is Draco's unnamed wife? What do Harry, Hermione, and Ron wind up doing for livings?

I can't help but think that these absences are some kind of fan-service. I've enjoyed the books, but I'm not exactly fannish, not for this world anyway. But these absences create a space for continuing fanfic.

I think Rowling enjoys fanfic.

I think Rowling will assume a pen name and WRITE fanfic under it.

She made the pairings she wants to enforce in canon, and left everything else open.

I think the notion that every loose end needs to be tied up is kind of a recent notion. However, it occurs to me that, movies being different from books, there is room for a movie-only pre-epologue that does tie most of them up. Successful movie franchises seem harder to suppress than novel sequels.

In interviews, she's answered those as -- "Harry probably goes back to school and finishes up; she never really thought about Luna and Neville until someone else brought it up and she thought it was ridiculous and then she started thinking about it, and now she's open to the possibility, Harry and Ron are Aurors, with Harry being actually the head of the department, and Hermione doing something hush-hush with magical law enforcement."

But answering them with words like "probably". Yeah, she's open to fanfic on some of these topics.

I just finished reading the book minutes ago. There's really nothing I'm aching to know anymore. Once the main problems were solved, the epilogue was just cute details to me.

My main regret is that Dennis Creevey never justified his existence. Colin was barely better than redundant himself, but his kid brother... did he even get mentioned aside from a few times in Book 4? Even the Bloody Baron has a better chance of showing up in a series synopsis.
