Union Members for Bush
Jun. 24th, 2004 09:28 pmI suppose that in a world that can contain Log Cabin Republicans it was inevitable. I've never understood Log Cabin Republicans - their existence stuck me as a contradiction, an enigma, a puzzle. They even seemed a bit treacherous to me, supporting the man who would destroy their fellows. But, being straight, I never felt that sense of betrayal in my gut.
I do not work in an industry that is unionized, but I grew up in a union household. I heard tales of a grandfather beaten by scabs and company-men. My eyeglasses, what checkups I needed, and a variety of other things came from the union hall. I lived for over a decade in a co-op owned and operated by my father's Local Union. And when I went to college I paid my tuition with the earnings I made as a summer helper on a variety of jobs. Thanks to that, I escaped college without a single Stafford loan to stalk me as I made my own way in the world.
So, when I see union members supporting the party that has been starving public higher education so that fewer people like me can gain access to it, methodically breaking any union it can, naming an airport for the man who broke PATCO, I understand that sense of betrayal. When I see a union member supporting the man who refused to sign any bill creating a Department of Homeland Security that did not break the unions of the agencies it would comprise, who smeared Max Cleland - who lost limbs in vietnam - by comparing him to Osama Bin Laden because of his refusal to vote for a Union-busting Homeland Security Department bill, and who has been making repeated attempts to destroy the overtime laws on which so many working families rely to make ends meet I grow disgusted.
A union member who supports Bush deserves to spend eternity alongside Judas Iscariot in Satan's icy asshole.
