חי, that is, 18. חי(Chai) is the hebrew word for life, and as a number it has a value of 18. Thus it is customary to give charity in increments of 18.

My apology for the confusion - this was originally posted to [livejournal.com profile] liberaljews where the audience would be able to parse it.
