Is America the only country where people get their philosophical views from pop culture? (Passion of the Christ, The Matrix, etc). Then there's always when people start to assimilate the flavor of the month, at the expense of national identity (ie, Japanese Anime).
As for Gibson, to quote Goethe: "there is something terrifying about a man of genius of whom stupid people are proud."
